There is considerable variation in the diagnosis and treatment of prolapse in both primary and secondary care. Treatments range from conservative (pessary, pelvic physiotherapy) to surgical. This project aims to reduce variation in practice and improve care outcomes by systematically mapping this variation, developing a national cohort of women with prolapse, and creating a predictive model for treatment effectiveness.

Approximately 60,000–65,000 women with POP are referred annually, of whom 21% are treated surgically. This involves 19,000–20,000 primary pessary treatments and 13,000–14,000 prolapse surgeries annually.
